Mini Movie Review: DUNE: PART TWO

Well, DUNE: PART TWO is better than its prequel, DUNE. But, screenplays about a figure clearly drawn from Jesus Christ and medieval era family and political intrigue, even though this movie takes place thousands of years in the future, seem old hat to me. No specific character felt fully compelling or sympathetic. The overarching emotional tone is quite cynical and, hence, distancing. I did enjoy the cinematography, special effects (especially of the giant, fantastical sand worms), costumes, sets, high tech. props, and music.

While watching this DUNE follow-up, also directed by Denis Villeneuve, I kept thinking about its parallels with America’s and other countries’ current political situations, which felt chilling. But, a fictional universe filled almost entirely with characters maneuvering for domination over others and masses of pliant, sheep-like followers is cold, impersonal, and rather sad. Plus, both DUNE movies seem overly oriented towards the belief of predestination, with which I largely don’t agree.
